The definition of 'poor response': Bologna criteria.

is believed to occur during the early stages of gamete fusion, and thus before the sperm tail is incorporated into the oocyte. Thus, our figure represents a specific temporal stage of fertilization and not the entire sequence of events. It would, therefore, be inaccurate and misleading to have shown the sperm tail incorporated into the oocyte at this stage. While we are content with the fact that Fig. 2 (Kashir et al., 2010) was indeed a correct representation of a specific temporal stage of fertilization, and we agree with Ramalho-Santos that specific attention is required in future publications with regard to the precise positioning of the sperm tail, we recommend that authors also need to place significant consideration upon temporal aspects of the specific physiological and molecular events being described in order to minimize the risk of reader misinterpretation. Sir, We read with interest the article entitled " ESHRE consensus on the definition of 'poor response' to ovarian stimulation for in vitro fertilization: the Bologna criteria " published in the July 2011 issue of Human Reproduction (Ferraretti et al., 2011). In the Abstract section, the authors state that 'the definition presented here represents the first Figure 2 Schematic representation of the signaling cascade induced by PLCz following delivery into the oocyte as understood when Kashir et al. (2010) was published. Here, the sperm tail is not shown to be fused with the oocyte since the authors were referring to a specific temporal stage of fertilization and not the entire sequence of events. Live birth rates following natural cycle IVF in women with poor ovarian response according to the Bologna criteria.
STUDY QUESTION What is the effect of natural cycle IVF in women with poor ovarian response according to the new ESHRE definition for poor ovarian responders: the Bologna criteria? SUMMARY ANSWER Although natural cycle IVF is a promising treatment option for normal responders, poor ovarian responders, as described by the Bologna criteria, have a very poor prognosis and do not appear to experie...
متن کاملThe Bologna criteria for poor ovarian response: the good, the bad and the way forward.
The management of poor ovarian response (POR) remains one of the most significant challenges of in vitro fertilization. Numerous interventions have been proposed, yet few have been shown to be beneficial. The most important problem in evaluating the available evidence has been the lack of a standardized definition of POR. The Bologna criteria for POR have been recently introduced to provide a f...
متن کاملEffect of Dehydroepiandrosterone Administration in Patients with Poor Ovarian Response According to the Bologna Criteria
BACKGROUND Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is now widely used as an adjuvant to IVF treatment protocols in poor responders. However, clinical evidence for DHEA on improvement of ovarian response and IVF outcome is still limited, the validity of the results of the earlier studies, especially the varied inclusion criteria, is a subject of debate. Recently, the ESHRE Working Group developed a new de...
متن کاملLive birth rates in Bologna poor responders treated with ovarian stimulation for IVF/ICSI.
This retrospective study determined the efficacy of ovarian stimulation for IVF/intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) in poor ovarian responders fulfilling the Bologna criteria for poor ovarian response and identified predictors of live birth rates. Overall, 485 patients undergoing 823 ovarian stimulation cycles for IVF/ICSI with maximum gonadotrophin dose (≥ 300 IU) between January 2009 and ...
متن کاملManagement of Poor Responders in IVF: Is There Anything New?
Despite the fact that in the last two decades an enormous number of papers on the topic of poor ovarian response have been published in the literature, so far it has been impossible to identify any efficient treatment to improve the ovarian response and the clinical outcome of this group of patients. The incidence of poor ovarian responders among infertile women has been estimated at 9-24% but ...
متن کاملThe Bologna criteria for poor ovarian response: a contemporary critical appraisal
Postponement of child bearing and maternal age at first pregnancy are on the rise, contributing considerably to an increase in age-related infertility and the demand for assisted reproductive technologies (ART) treatment. This brings to the infertility clinics many women with low ovarian reserve and poor ovarian response (POR) to conventional stimulation. The Bologna criteria were released to s...
